The incident reportedly occurred a few days after the authorities had received more than 300 armed Luo Nuer youth said to have moved to Duk county.

The commissioner of Duk county, Michael Malual Wuor, told Sudan Tribune that the region had come under threat of rebels elements.

“On 14 [July] one person was shot dead and one was injured on a motor bike between Ayueldit and Poktap. The injured person is now here in the hospital. Again on 19th. another policeman was shot on the same road near Ayueldit village by armed Lou Nuer men,” he said.

The attack followed an earlier warning from the Uror county commissioner, Mabior Bol regarding the movement of 300 armed men from Uror said to be on a hunting mission.

“They said they were going out for hunting. How can 300 men go hunting? So we instructed youth to patrol the area. The army was also informed. One day later, the incident happened. These are criminals terrorising people in the county”, said Wuor.

Duk is currently hosting over 30,000 individuals from Lou Nuer areas of Nyirol and Uror counties since the crisis started in December 2013.

In May, five children were abducted from Duk county by unknown criminals, who were believed to be from the Murle ethnic tribe after a 10-year old girl who escaped from the abducted hands narrated the story. There was no incident reported until last month.

Wuor said the displaced people in Duk were peaceful and not involved in rebellion.

“There is no reason for us as Duk to deny the vulnerable people, women children and other youth who think that they are not part and parcel to the rebel groups. So we welcome them and that is why they are secure now. They are getting food, they are getting education, and they are getting medication and other sort of human needs. We are one people for one nation and we must accept to life together,”stressed Wuor.
