Ambassador Phee made these remarks on Thursday after presenting her credentials to South Sudan’s president Salva Kiir at state house in the country’s capital, Juba.

Phee told a reception ceremony following her meeting with president Kiir that there was no military solution to the war that has killed thousands of people and displaced millions.

“I also relayed to President Kiir how proud I am to be a guest of this young nation, and that I arrive with a sense of urgency and purpose,” said the new US envoy to Juba.

“I will serve in any way to support all serious efforts to immediately end the conflict, to promptly establish a transitional government, and to begin to regain the opportunities present at independence in 2011.The United States is convinced that there is no military solution to this conflict,” she stressed.

Phee, a successor to the first US ambassador to South Sudan, Susan Page, reiterated Washington’s concerns about the suffering of the population in the world’s youngest nation.

“I shared with President Kiir the deep concern of the American people and the U.S. government about the suffering of the people of South Sudan and confirmed that the United States remains committed to the people of South Sudan and to the realisation of their dreams for a peaceful and prosperous future,” she said.
