South Sudanese rebels establish more economic institutions in controlled areas

July 30, 2015 (ADDIS ABABA) – South Sudan’s armed opposition faction of the Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Movement (SPLM-IO) led by the country’s former vice president, Riek Machar, has established more economic institutions in the areas controlled by the rebel group.

The opposition leader, Machar, has issued a number of orders establishing national committees and corporations in order to “enhance” economic activities in the rebel-held territories.

“Pursuant to April 15-18, 2014, Nasir Consultative Conference Resolutions and December 6-12, 2014, Pagak Conference Resolutions to enhance the economy of South Sudan, SUDAR Telecom Corporation is hereby established by this order as a National Telecommunication Company representing any assigned interest of people of South Sudan in this sector,” reads the order signed by the rebel leader.

In the subsequent orders issued on 28 July and copies of which were extended to Sudan Tribune, the former vice president established a National Committee for Roads and Transport Systems.

Among other economic institutions established included SUDAR Electricity Corporation; SUDAR Electricity Distribution Company; SUDAR High Tension Transmission Grid Company Ltd; and SUDAR Telecom Corporation.

Machar also established a national committee for Women Empowerment, Child Welfare and Social Development (WECWSD).
