Sudan says Russian firms will have priority in uranium extraction contracts
July 30, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – A Sudanese official announced today that Russian companies will given priority in uranium extraction contracts, a day after a major gold concession was awarded to a Russian firm.
The director general of the Geological Research Authority in Sudan Yousif al-Samani explained that uranium was found in the past in certain parts of the country.
He told the Russian-based Sputnik news agency on Thursday that research and studies are continuing for the discovery of more uranium and soliciting investments for the extraction of this “globally desirable metal”.
“Uranium is perhaps of higher importance than gold and other minerals and is used in critical strategic industries, especially in the midst of technical development witnessed by the world in the modern era,” Samani said.
“Russian companies will be given priority in the context of economic cooperation and investment partnerships between the two countries, and to benefit from their expertise and technology they developed to work on the discovery and extraction of uranium metal, particularly since Russia is working with us to create a geological map and mineral map of Sudan” he added.
The official praised Russia’s economic cooperation with Sudan, saying that their companies “have made a strong position in Sudan, especially in metals and its investments”.
On Wednesday, a Russian company by the name of Siberia signed an agreement with the Sudanese Ministry of Minerals to extract gold in the Red Sea and the River Nile states which was described as the largest investment contract in Sudan’s history in the field of minerals.
