JEM-Dabajo officially announces its candidate for Darfur authority

August 2, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – The Justice and Equality Movement led by Bakheit Abdel-Karim Dabajo (JEM-Dabajo) announced its support for the candidacy of Osman al-Bushra for the chairmanship of Darfur Regional Authority (DRA).

Last July, JEM-Dabajo criticized the DRA chairman Tijani al-Sissi for concentrating the implementation of recovery and development project in some areas in Darfur. Also, the group also pointed that al-Sissi’s group continues to control the five most important positions in the regional body despite the split of Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) into two parties.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Dabajo’s group officially backed the appointment of the former political secretary of the rebel Sudan Liberation Movement – Unity (SLM-Unity), al-Bushra, who returned to Khartoum in February 2011 after the rejection of his faction to join the Doha process.

JEM-D abajo’s political official and rapporteur of its high political committee Nahar Osman Nahar told Sudan Tribune that al-Bushra is the candidate of Liberation and Justice Party (LJP) of Bahr Idriss Abu Garda stressing that his candidature is supported by two of three DDPD signatories.

The statement said that Bushra is “one of the SLM founders, and he is an accepted and qualified personality”, pointing that he was a successful DRA heath minister during the past four years. Also it said he has good relations with the holdout rebel groups.

Bushra was appointed in the DRA executive body within the seats of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP), as he was not a LJM member.

In line with the DDPD, the president of the republic will appoint the DRA chairman after consultations with signatories.

JEM-Dabajo further urged the government to implement the presidential decree of 28 June which extends the DRA mandate and provides to reshuffle the regional administration chaired by al-Sissi.

During the weekend the governors of West and North Darfur formed their governments and appointed two ministers from Dabajo group in their cabinets in accordance with a political partnership signed with the ruling NCP before the elections.

Nahar told Sudan Tribune that al-Tijani al-Taher Karshoom is appointed a minister of culture and communication in the West Darfur state government and Mustafa Shoghar is picked for the youth and sport ministry in North Darfur state.

The two ministers were detained by JEM- Gibril Ibrahim. They recently escaped from jail and reached the Sudanese capital.
