Arab human rights committee to visit Sudan
August 8, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – A delegation from the Human Rights Committee of the Arab league on Sunday would visit Khartoum at the request of the Sudanese government.
According to media reports, the delegation which will be headed by the chairman of the committee, Hadi Ali M Alyami, would discuss the ongoing arrangements for holding the 8th session of the committee.
The delegation will also hold introductory workshops to government agencies and civil society organizations on the Arab Charter for Human Rights (ACHR) and the committee’s working mechanisms.
Alyami said in a statement on Saturday that the delegation would meet with the Sudanese Advisory Council for Human Rights headed by the minister of justice, Awad al-Hassan al-Nour as well as several concerned ministers.
He added the visit, which would last for five days, comes within the framework of the committee’s mandate and its interactive dialogue with the member states of the ACHR.
It should be mentioned that the visit of the committee comes at the invitation of the Sudanese Advisory Council for Human Rights.
The delegation would include the committee’s deputy chairman, Abdel-Mageed Za’alani, besides members of the committee, Asaad Nai’im Younis, Asim Rabab’aa, Izz al-Din al-Asbahi and Mohamed Fazi’i.
Last May, the committee received the first report from Sudan regarding measures that have been taken to implement rights and freedoms set forth in the ACHR besides the progress made in its actual application according to article (48) of the charter.
ACHR was adopted by the council of the Arab League on 22 May 2004 and affirms the principles contained in the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenants on Human Rights and the Cairo Declaration on Human Rights in Islam.
The human rights committee is the body responsible for following up on the implementation of the ACHR. It reviews reports from member states regarding the implementation of the measures stipulated in the charter.
