AU Commissioner to assess misery in Darfur
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, Aug 14, 2004 (PANA) — An African Union delegation led by
Political Affairs Commissioner Julia Dolly Joiner arrives in
Sudan Sunday to assess the humanitarian situation in the strife-
torn Darfur region.
The AU Commission announced Saturday that the delegation’s visit
from 15-17 August is a follow-up to the mission undertaken by AU
Commission Chairperson Alpha Oumar Konare from 20-22 June 2004.
Besides meeting with Sudanese authorities in Khartoum, Joiner
will also meet with local authorities, humanitarian agencies, AU
military observers and internally displaced persons in Darfur
region.
“The purpose of the Commissioner’s visit is to assess the
humanitarian situation on the ground and see how the present
efforts by the AU towards alleviating the sufferings of the
affected population could be strengthened,” the Commission
statement added.
