Sudanese embassy in Saudi Arabia warns of illegal recruitment of female domestic workers

August 17, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese embassy in Saudi Arabia said that it has received information on agencies and individuals involved in the recruitment of female domestic workers amid recent controversy.

Social networking sites and press reports over the past two days spoke of two Sudanese female maids working with Saudi families who were subject to harsh treatment and abuse.

Questions arose on how the pair made it to Saudi Arabia to work as maids despite a ban imposed by the Khartoum that prohibits female citizens from taking these jobs abroad.

The embassy said in a statement on Monday that they were made aware of their arrest on August 13th by Saudi authorities for refusing to continue working for their sponsors.

It explained that an embassy representative was able to visit them in prison and get acquainted on their case by officials there.

As a result, the embassy managed to secure a settlement from the Saudi employers to pay them an unspecified sum of money and get the case dropped.

The statement emphasized that they “completed the basic information about agencies and people” who allowed Sudanese females to work as maids abroad in contravention to the law.
