The Sudanese Government continues to support Jangaweed militias

The Sudanese government forces and Jangaweed (or Arab) militias have not halted committing atrocities against black African civilians in western Sudan. The Jangaweed have not been disarmed as demanded by the international community. Instead the government has redeployed the militias to new locations so as to decieve the world.

The RMCE learned that the Sudanese government has set up twelve training camps for Janjaweed in order to counter any attempt by the international community to deploy troops in western Sudan. Recruitment of students and Arabs from Chad and other countries has increased. Moreover, more guns are being made available to the Jangaweed and other Mujahedin (or Islamic) fighters.

Meanwhile the Jangaweed continue to target displaced civilians. It has become very dangerous for displaced persons to venture out of camps to collect wild fruits, firewood and water. Men are killed, and women are raped.

On 29 July, the Jangaweed attacked villages in the southwest of Al Geneina city and killed more than ten persons. Several women were abducted or raped. Some of the victims are:
– 1. Saadia Adam Borma, a 16-year-old Massaleit girl from Morney area, was raped.
– 2. Sogara Abdalla Abderahman, from Kobosca village, was raped and later killed because she tried to defend her daughter from rape. Both mother and daughter were caught while collecting wild fruits.
– 3. Zahara Dawod, from Tabing village, was abducted by the militias. Her whereabouts are not known.

Moreover, on 27 July, government forces and Jangaweed killed two massaleit men from Mestery area because they tried to protect their wives from rape. The women were raped.

Furthermore, Massaleit omdas (local chiefs) risk arrest, torture or even death for refusing to collaborate with the Janjaweed. The two persons mentioned below face a particularly serious risk.
– 1. Abdalla Nourdin, Omda of Habeela-Kejengessy.
– 2. Dodain Nasir, Omda of Beida.

The RMCE urge the international community to intervene to stop the systematic rape of women and killing of civilians. The Sudanese government promise to disarm the Jangaweed is a lie.
