Egypt FM to visit Sudan after non-aligned meeting in South Africa

CAIRO, Aug 15 (AFP) — Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit is to visit Sudan as part of a week-long African tour following Tuesday’s Non-Aligned Movement meeting in South Africa, the ministry announced Sunday.

The tour will also take him to Zambia and to Kenya, which hosts peace talks between the Sudanese government and southern rebels of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army aimed at ending the 21-year-old conflict, Africa’s longest running.

Egypt has been a leading opponent of US-led efforts to threaten Sudan with international action over its bloody suppression of a rebellion by ethnic minorities in the western region of Darfur.

Abul Gheit will make a further African tour in November, visiting Gambia, Angola and Nigeria, the ministry added.
