Former chief survives death in Lakes state

September 13, 2015 (RUMBEK) – A former chief in South Sudan’s Lakes state survived death in a targeted shooting by a man under the influence of alcohol, authorities said.

Majok Akech is a former chief of the Riir section of Yirol West county in Lakes state.

Michael Makeny, a police officer said trigger-happy man who shot the chief was drunk.

“We captured him and former chief Majok Akech is alive, but sustained wounds on his thigh” said Makeny.

The ex-chief was, at the time of the unexpected incident, reportedly seated in the market.

Lakes state has been blighted by conflict since South Sudan broke away from Sudan in July 2011. Calls for removal of caretaker governor, Matur Chut Dhoul have been ignored.
