Ambassador Buay congratulates South Sudanese diplomats for blocking sanctions
SOUTH SUDAN DIPLOMATS IN MOSCOW SHOULD BE CONGRATULATED FOR PERSUADING THE FEDERATION OF RUSSIA TO BLOCK SANCTIONS

The people of South Sudan are extremely delighted with the performance of our diplomats in Moscow in improving diplomatic relations between the Republic of South Sudan and the Russian Federation. The friendly relationship between the people of South Sudan and the Russian people goes back to the time of the liberation struggle. It should be noted that the former Soviet Union supported the SPLM/A militarily for eight years to fight for the freedom of the people of South Sudan. The support the SPLA Movement obtained from Russia during the cold war from 1983—91 gave the people of South Sudan the opportunity to liberate themselves from their oppressors.
When South Sudan became independence in July, 2011, the Russian Federation was one of the countries that recognized the independence of South Sudan with pride knowing quiet well what the Soviet Union did to the SPLM/A in terms of military support in the 1980s. When the people of South Sudan celebrated their independence, they remembered the support of Russia during the liberation struggle that culminated into their independence. Without the support of Soviet Union after May, 16, 1983 rebellion, the SPLA could not have liberated most of South Sudan.
Our diplomats in Russia have done a marvelous work in persuading the Russian Federation to bring together the Republic of the Sudan and the Republic of South Sudan. The bilateral talks which took place on September 10th, 2015, and led to the Joint Communique of the Foreign ministers of Sudan and South Sudan, could be credited to the diplomatic work of South Sudan diplomats in Moscow.
Most importantly, the South Sudan diplomats in Moscow should be congratulated and appreciated for persuading the Russian Federation to reject and oppose sanctions that were proposed by some Western countries at the UN Security Council against individuals in South Sudan.
The media, particularly the Sudan Tribune, should publicly acknowledge that the position taken by the Russian Federation at the UN in opposing the sanctions against the Republic of South Sudan, was the work of our diplomats in Moscow. Every media outlet should join the people of South Sudan in congratulating and thanking our diplomats in Moscow for the diplomatic victory that blocked the proposed sanctions.
