UN confirms motar shelling in S. Sudan’s Upper Nile state

October 7, 2015 (MALAKAL) – The United Nations mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) said mortar shells were heard Wednesday from the west bank of river Nile in Upper Nile state.

The mission, however, said it was not in a position to confirm who was shelling the area.

According to UNMISS, some 260 new internally displaced persons arrived at its protection of civilians site from the west bank of the Nile in just a single day.

Those new arrivals were reportedly fleeing renewed violence as well as food insecurity.

There are currently more than 45,000 residents sheltering in the protection of civilians site in Malakal with some 185,000 people in sites across the country, the mission said.
