Ngok Dinka and Misseriya discuss establishment of market in Abyei

October 9, 2015 (ABYEI) – Efforts to foster reconciliation and peaceful co-existence between the Ngok Dinka and Misseriya tribes were boosted when the two communities discussed ways of establishing a joint market in the oil-producing region of Abyei.

The meeting was organised by the officer in charge of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) Lt Gen Birhanu Jula Gelalcha.

Addressing the community leaders at the meeting held in Todach, Gelalcha said the initiative was based on the desire of the two communities to resume trading activities, as a step towards building confidence, mutual understanding and peaceful co-existence.

He stressed that establishment of a market would allow the Ngok Dinka and the Misseriya to interact peacefully and carry out legitimate activities for their mutual benefit, which would further reinforce dialogue, and foster peace and reconciliation between the communities.

The two delegations reportedly found common ground on various issues, but disagreed on the site for the joint market.

Both the Misseriya and Ngok Dinka, however, agreed that UNISFA would continue the initiative, and would bring the two communities together through mediation.

Meanwhile, another joint meeting, UNISFA said, would be convened in the near future.
