Diaspora youth condemn inter-communal clashes in Warrap state
October 19, 2015 (RUMBEK) – Youth from Tonj East county in South Sudan’s Warrap state have condemned last week’s inter-communal violence that killed over 90 people.
The Diaspora youth, in a protest letter, extended to Sudan Tribune, demanded that government immediately investigates the incident and punish those found responsible.
“We hereby express our grief for the loss of lives and pay sincere condolences to all those who have lost their loved ones on both sides of the warring parties. We also condemn this odious violence, including the wanton destruction of property such as burning of houses in all possible terms and demand that it ceases immediately and that the ringleaders of this crime must be found and punished to the fullest extent of the law,” reads the letter signed by 14 youth.
Members of the Luac-jang and Thiik communities clashed over land ownership of Lol-lith. Over 90 people were killed on both sides and 144 people were wounded.
Following the incident, Warrap state administration immediately relocated its cabinet seat to Romich in order to properly address the inter-communal problems.
The caretaker governor of Warrap state, Akec Tong Aleu, however, said calm had been restored after both communities adopted a peace and reconciliation approach to the matter.
