Two killed in Jonglei’s Twic East county ambush
November 1, 2015 (JUBA) – At least two people were killed in an ambush that occured in South Sudan’s Jonglei’s Twic East county on Saturday, authorities told Sudan Tribune.
The county commissioner, Dau Akoi Jurkuch, said the duo were game rangers.
“The wildlife soldiers were traveling from Panyagor to Poktap when they fell into an ambush near Wernyol,” he said.
He further explained the identities of the attackers remained unknown and no arrests had been made and that 12 women traveling with two rangers escaped unhurt.
“When local people and youth tried to search for the murders, their footmarks were found in the forest but nobody was arrested,” said the Twic East commissioner.
Twic East county authorities, however, said the attack occurred on Wednesday, but the news only reached on Friday due to poor telecommunications network in the area.
On 22 October, 28 people were killed in Jalle payam of Bor county in an attack on a cattle camp with authorities accusing raiders from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) of being responsible. But GPAA authorities denied any involvement in the attack.
Child abductions and cattle raids have been common practices in Jonglei even before the outbreak of the December 2013 conflict in South Sudan.
