SPLM-N rebels ambush government troops on Blue Nile
November 3, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – The fighters of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) killed several Sudanese troops in an attack on a military convoy, 15 kilometers south of the Blue Nile state capital of Ed-Damazin.
In a statement extended to Sudan Tribune Tuesday, SPLM-N official spokesperson, Arnu Ngutulu Lodi said the ambush against the government allied militia known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took place at 3:00 pm. (local time) on Monday in an area which lies between Gabanait and Agadi, 15 kilometres from Ed-Damazin.
Lodi stressed that SPLM-N forces destroyed two Land Cruiser vehicles, saying the government militia fled the battlefield leaving several dead bodies.
He added their forces seized 2 Dushka cannons, one Garanov machine gun, 2 RPG 7 and 9 Kalashnikov rifles, saying that one of the SPLM-N soldiers was wounded in the clashes.
The spokesperson further pointed that the ambush comes within the framework of the SPLM-N forces moves to repel the government summer military campaign.
The Sudanese army spokesperson was not reachable for comment.
Blue Nile and neighbouring South Kordofan state have been the scene of violent conflict between the SPLM-N and the Sudanese army since 2011.
The warring parties have declared unilateral cease fire last month, but SPLM-N last week accused the government of violating the truce and reported fresh clashes by the government army in the strategic area of Jebel Kolgo, south-west of Ed-Damazin.
The Sudanese government and rebel group failed to reach a cessation of hostilities agreement after a series of talks brokered by the African Union High Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) in November 2014.
Since, the fighting between the two parties resumed in South Kordofan and Blue Nile.
The two sides will resume talks in Addis Ababa in mid-November.
