Sudanese authorities arrest two suspects over abduction of Ukrainian pilot
November 5, 2015 (KABKABIYA) – North Darfur authorities have arrested two people suspected of being involved in the kidnapping of Ukrainian pilot from West Darfur state on 17 October.
On 20 October, West Darfur officials confirmed the abduction saying the pilot and the translator are working with an international group in Kerenek area of West Darfur, near North Darfur state.
They further said the kidnappers crossed into North Darfur in direction of Kabkabiya and Saraf Omra areas.
A Security official Thursday told Sudan Tribune that they apprehended the two suspects based on strong evidence indicating their involvement in abduction, adding they found in their possession some medicines, mineral water and canned food.
The official who is not authorized to speak to the media further said one of the suspects is a medical assistant and the second is a relative of the abductors from West Darfur, adding he misled the security service to prevent the arrest of the perpetrators.
The pilot was in the region to drive a spray plane within the framework of a prevention operation organized by health ministry.
The abductors reportedly refused a mediation conducted by tribal leaders claiming they are a revolutionary group without identifying themselves, and as such they reject any tribal tutelary.
According to the source, they demand to negotiate directly with the government.
Earlier, the security services said they didn’t receive any demand of ransom from the kidnappers as they used to do.
