Sudanese diplomats meet with US officials for talks on normalization roadmap: sources
November 19, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – Diplomatic sources in Khartoum revealed that intensive meetings were held in Washington between Sudanese diplomats and U.S. State Department officials to chart the path for normalization of relations between the two countries.
The sources speaking to Sudan Tribune said that the delegation of the U.S. congressmen which recently visited the country, issued a detailed report on the impact of economic sanctions imposed on Sudan since 1997.
It claimed that the delegation issued a “positive” report which asserted that economic sanctions against Sudan affected sectors other than government including ordinary citizens, businessmen and banks.
The Sudanese Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ghandour met with the U.S. Chargé d’affaires in Khartoum Jerry Lanier on Thursday to discuss what was agreed upon during his meeting with his U.S. counterpart John Kerry on the sidelines of meetings of the General Assembly of the United Nations.
The Foreign Ministry spokesman Ali al-Sadiq told reporters that Ghandour stressed the keenness of Sudan to normalize relations between the two countries and to have an exchange of visits between officials of the two countries during the coming period.
“The meeting of Ghandour with Kerry gives a reason for optimism about the normalization of relations between the two countries,” he said.
