Addressing chiefs in Rumbek town Wednesday, Matur Chut Dhuol urged peace and forgiveness among the Rup and Pakam rival communities.

The meeting, among others, sought to address counter revenge killings and raiding of animals among the various Lakes state communities.

“This meeting will build confidence and all cycle of revenge will end through this face to face community meeting”, stressed the caretaker governor.

A number of youth intellectuals also attended the meeting alongside traditional chiefs.

Moses Ater, a Lakes state activist, doubts the meeting will have any positive impact. He said it would not change community attitude of revenge.

“This community meeting will change nothing in the minds of our communities – the revenge is caused by lack of justice and mistrust to the state government of which public is showing low support to state government,” said Ater.

“The best option is to disarm all civil populations and rebuild trust of what is all about the state government could support to them,” he added.

A group of Lakes state activists, civil society groups, intellectuals and traditional chiefs have repeatedly called for the resignation of the caretaker governor, alleging he has completely failed to run the state since his appointment in January 2012.
