CAIRO, Aug 19, 2004 (MENA) — Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa called upon the Arab governments to start mass media campaigns on a popular fund-raising for the inhabitants of Darfur, west of Sudan.

Speaking to reporters Thursday, Moussa announced opening two bank accounts in Banque de Caire in both the Egyptian pound and American dollar for popular donations for the conflict-hit western Sudan region.

Moussa said he assigned Samir Hosni, director of the Arab League’s Africa and Afro-Arab Cooperation Department, to travel to Sudan within two days to attend meetings of the joint committee supervising the implementation of the agreement reached between the Sudanese government and the UN.

Hosni will also visit Darfur and coordinate with the African Union mission.

Meanwhile, Moussa voiced dissatisfaction with the situation in Somalia.

He expressed belief they are incapable of reconciling and that private interests have overweighed public interest.
