Tensions between Khartoum and Cairo have recently escalated following accusations by Khartoum of mistreatment of Sudanese nationals in Egypt by police and security forces.

Last week, Sudan’s foreign minister Ibrahim Ghandour and his Egyptian counterpart Samih Shoukry agreed to form a committee headed by officials from both ministries with the participation of the concerned bodies in both countries to address those accusations as well as any problems that may arise in the future.

Sudan’s foreign ministry undersecretary Abdel-Ghani al-Naem Wednesday has chaired the meeting of the committee tasked with investigating the conditions of Sudanese nationals in Egypt including representatives from the ministry of interior, security services and the Sudanese working abroad body.

Al-Naem told reporters following the meeting the joint committee would meet during this month, stressing that harassment of Sudanese in Egypt has stopped.
“We haven’t received new complaints during the past period,” he said.

He pointed the meeting discussed the report of the fact-finding mission of the Sudanese embassy in Cairo which investigated the killing of Sudanese nationals on the Egyptian-Israeli borders.

More than twenty Sudanese migrants attempting to infiltrate the Israeli borders from Sinai Peninsula have been killed by Egyptian border guards last month.

The Sudanese diplomat denied they withheld information from the media regarding the abuse of the Sudanese in Egypt, adding that investigation on the incidents is underway.
He stressed that the Egyptian side is fully cooperating on the issue which has captured the interest of the Sudanese public opinion during the past period.
