The move followed weeks of investigation, which saw Nhial suspended for a month.

Governor Nyoun’s decree did not, however, explain why the mayor was sacked.

Majak is accused of allegedly grabbing land demarcated for the government in Bor town.

The mayor reportedly rejected attempts to halt him from building on the land, leading to tension between him and the local government and law enforcement minister Peter Wal.

Wal earlier told Sudan Tribune that Nhial was suspended till his case was resolved.

The minister of youth, sport and culture, Peter Chol Wal, who headed the committee that investigated the former mayor, declined to reveal why the former mayor was sacked.

Several attempts by Sudan Tribune to contact the embattled mayor were unsuccessful.
