SLM-AW announces arrest of its military spokesperson in Darfur
December 13, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan Liberation Movement(SLM), led by Abdel Wahid al-Nur (SLM-AW) Sunday announced the arrest of its military spokesman Mustafa Tambour.
In a statement released on Sunday, the rebel group said Tambour and two other members were apprehended on Friday 11 December in the vicinity of Ed Daein, the capital of East Darfur State.
The spokesman of the office of the SLM-AW chairman, Mohamed Abdel Rahman al-Nayer called on the human rights organization to press the government for the release of the three detainees and to treat them as prisoners of war in accordance with the international humanitarian law.
The SLM-AW and other rebel movements in Darfur region have been fighting the Sudanese government for twelve years now. A series peace treaties had so far failed to bring peace to the western Sudanese region.
The Sudanese security service did not confirm the arrest of the three rebels.
For its part, the movement’s office in the U.S. has urged the International Committee of Red Cross(ICRC) to seek to guarantee the safety and well being of Mustafa Tambour ’’who suffers from kidney disease.’’
The office has also called upon Amnesty International to follow up the dossier of the detained rebels and press Khartoum to respect the international laws and the treaties relatives to the treatment of prisoners of war.
