Student killed in South Sudan’s Lakes state
December 13, 2015 (Rumbek) – A senior four student was last week killed from the house of the former speaker of South Sudan’s Lakes state, authorities told Sudan Tribune.
Lakes state’s local government and law enforcement minister, Samuel Maciek identified the deceased as Monywat Matching Majuec, but said no arrests had yet been made.
The minister, however, urged the family of the deceased to remain calm and allow state authorities do whatever they could to apprehend the suspected killers.
Makec Mading, an uncle to the deceased, described the killing as a “complete terror act” and urge state government to enhance security among the population in Lakes state.
“Monywat was purely innocent – he did not have differences with anyone. This killing is completely a terrorist act and it shows that innocent person can die like Monywat without proper reason in Rumbek. This is serious and let government do what it can to protect people from all forms of killing,” said a visibly-emotional Mading.
Lakes state has, since the appointment of Maj-Gen Matur Chut Dhuol in 2012, been embroiled in a cycle of revenge killings, with traditional chiefs, intellectual and activists calling President Salva Kiir to remove the governor, but so far all calls are been overlooked. Dhuol is accused of having allegedly failed to quell down insecurity in Lakes state.
