SPLM leadership nominates six for Wau state governorship
December 15, 2015 (JUBA) – South Sudan’s ruling party (SPLM) office in Western Bahr el Ghazal state nominated, during its extraordinary meeting conducted Friday last week, six candidates earmarked to contest for the governorship of the newly-created Wau state.
The 29 of 51 SPLM state Liberation Council members who attended the meeting, argued that directives to nominate the candidates came from the ruling party’s head, Salva Kiir.
The ruling party’s state secretary, Valentino Majok Majok said the move to call the meeting, which he chaired, was directed by the SPLM state chairperson, Mark Nyipuoch.
“I was just told by General Mark Nyipuoch Ubung who is our state party’s chairperson to call this meeting so that you the members of state Liberation Council should nominate your newly state leaders so that the list is taken to Juba,” Majok told Friday’s meeting.
“It is your chance as the members of the party state liberation council to wisely nominate your leaders who will governance the new states,” he stressed.
Meanwhile, seven SPLM state Liberation Council members from Raga state declined to nominate Wau state candidates nor those for Lol state awaiting President Kiir’s decision on approval of Raga as a separate state in line with the decree he issued in October.
The meeting did not, however, disclose names of the six nominated candidates. Sudan Tribune has learned that two generals, Elias Waya Ubung and Andrea Dominic were on the list that reportedly includes current deputy state governor, Zakariah Joseph Garang.
