Sudan’s dialogue committee says unanimous agreement on drafting new constitution

December 26, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – The chairman of the Sudanese national dialogue committee on issues of Governance Barakat Moussa al-Hawwati said that they reached a unanimous agreement on drafting a new constitution that affirms the independence of the judiciary, the rule of law, separation of powers and good governance.

“If the outcomes of the national dialogue are implemented, Sudan is bound to move to a new phase in its history,” al-Hawwati said at a forum commemorating the 60th anniversary of Sudan independence.

He described the dialogue process as a sign of a new reading of the political and social reality that would decipher hieroglyphs that created confrontations between the various political forces.

For his part, SPLM- Peace Faction called on president Omer Hassan al-Bashir to announce the start of writing the permanent constitution on the anniversary of independence as one of the most important outcomes of the national dialogue.

The head of the party Robert William Alexander said that the drafting of a permanent constitution puts a compass for all Sudanese to move to a new horizon towards the future.

“The Sudanese people are looking forward to an achievement through the preparation of a sustainable constitution for the first time in the modern history of Sudan that incorporates its national identity and political strategy,” Alexander said.

He explained that the new constitution is a humane and a national document that is superior to other national constitutions as it is a mirror in which every citizen sees himself in the present and future and contains other solutions to national issues.
