Army sergeant kills one , wounds people in S. Darfur Nyala

December 27, 2015 (NYALA) – A Sudanese army sergeant Sunday morning went into a shooting spree at the premises of the judiciary in Nyala, capital of South Darfur State, killing one person and wounding four others.

The court’s police opened fire at the assailant killing him on the spot.

Sudan Tribune correspondent in Nyala said a state of panic and chaos had engulfed the court house during the shooting until the police intervened and killed the man , who was dressed in army fatigues .

Nyala police commander , Lt. Brigadier Madani Mohamed Madani, said the sergeant , who is yet to be named, had had a dispute with an administrative officer over a residential plot of land .

The sergeant had built a home on the plot of land that belonged to the administrative officer, who filed a complaint .The judge ruled that the land was the officer’s property and should be returned to him. The judge also decided that the building should be removed next Thursday.

The assailant went to the court after receiving word that his foe was there to follow up the rulings’ implementation.

At the court’s frontier the assailant asked his foe to let him accompany him into the court. But the administrative officer declined, and escaped to the upper storey leaving the sergeant behind.

Then, the angry sergeant pulled his gun and started to shoot randomly, killing one man and wounding four others, three of them policemen, Lt. Brigadier Madani told the press.

‘’The police were forced to shoot and kill the armed assailant ,’’ Madani further said.

An informed source told Sudan Tribune a meeting will be held between the judiciary, the ministry of justice and the city’s lawyers to push for security to be provided inside the courts to protect the employees.

According to Sudan Tribune reporter a companion to the sergeant had tried to retrieve the deceased assailant’s weapon but the police apprehended and subjected him to immediate questioning.

Nyala police then cordoned the judiciary’s premises after evacuating it from tens of citizens who happened to be inside.
