The incident, which comes several days after the killing of civilians inside the premises of the state government in El-Geneina, prompted the police to beef up security measures to prevent new protests over the increasing insecurity in the town.

The assailants who were riding a vehicle fled in direction of the state capital without harming other people present in the place of the attack.

A police source who requested anonymity told Sudan Tribune that incident took place in Um Baloal area, 7 km east of El-Geneina.

He said a member of an armed group opened fire on the driver of a vehicle transporting people and killed him on the spot.

The source said the culprits did not harm the passengers of the vehicle and escaped from the scene.

The body of the deceased was carried to El-Geneina Teaching Hospital, following what the police cordoned the medical facility to prevent possible unrest.

Last Sunday angry demonstrators stormed the government premises in the town and burned the home of governor Khalil Abdallah to protest attacks by government militia on Moli village against the backdrop of a murder crime.

Reports by the West Darfur government say 13 persons were killed and 27 others hurt in the unrest.

The fatalities reportedly occurred due to the use of live ammunition by the security authorities.

Two investigation committees have been set up to probe the incidents. They will also probe the attacks on Moli and other villages affected by the raids of militiamen.

The committees have a week’s time to present their findings to the state governor and the federal justice minister.

SECURITY PLAN REVISED

Meanwhile, the West Darfur government has embarked on a review of its security plans taking into account the recent incidents.

He stressed his government was in full control of the town and life has returned to normal .

The governor further warned against rumour mongers and called on people to notify police immediately when they witness a crime or see instigators spreading rumours.
