Wau state governor vows full supports to UN activities in new state
January 26, 2016 (WAU) – The newly appointed governor of the newly created Wau state per the controversial 28 states decreed by President Salva Kiir, has vowed to cooperate with the United Nations (UN) organizations operating in the area.
The governor assured that his new government will provide full support and security for safety of the UN agencies and to ease their access in the region.
“And now we will do our best with my deputy to be in very close relationship, the access that you are talking about, we will talk with them tomorrow [Wednesday], those the security organs, police, prison and Wildlife because even the forces that are at the gate on the patrolling at night.
Earlier, aid agencies complained that they had been harassed and their access to the vulnerable populations was made difficult by security organs in the state.
The governor also cited lack of coordination between the state security organs and the relief organizations, saying there was need to notify such security organs for access to particular areas.
Waya also warned any authorities who were imposing money collection on the UN vehicles to immediately stop such action.
“These unauthorized collections of money from the UN convoy must stop and the deputy is here, he will see into it that such a thing is not repeated, any force that asks money from a vehicle of the United Nations that is passing, we will not leave him, so this is a promise from me and it is not going to repeat itself,” he assured.
Speaking to media after the meeting, the UN state coordinator, Winie Bibahuga, said their meeting with the state governor has come up with fruitful solutions.
“Today the United Nations Mission in South Sudan resident here in Wau town came to brief H.E the governor about operation of the mission and cooperation we are having with different stakeholders in the government and also to highlight the challenges that we find on the ground. The briefing goes well and we are happy about the commitment of the governor to peace, reconciliation and supporting all elements of reconciliation in this state,” she said.
Relief organizations play a vital role in the war-ravaged South Sudan as they deliver basic services to the vulnerable and displaced populations across the country.
