Press Release

Following the passing of deadline of the formation of Transitional Government of National Unity in the Republic of South Sudan, we the civil society Alliance hereby deeply regret and disappointed on the delay.

The people of South Sudan suffered so long due to the war that erupted on 15th December 2013 in Juba and spread to other parts of the country which many lives been lost, thousands of people displaced and many taking refuge in neighboring countries and outside. For that reason civil society doesn’t want more suffering to the citizens of South Sudan at this moment. The impact of the war resulted to a huge economics crisis as people are suffering from tripling prices on daily basis.

According to the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission’s timeline for the formation of Transitional Government of National Unity as per the Peace Agreement signed by the President Salva Kiir on behalf of Government, Riek Machar the leader of SPLM-IO, Former Detainees and other stakeholders on 17th – 26th August 2015 supposed to happen on 22nd January 2016 however, it didn’t take place due to some issues best known to main stakeholders.

Therefore, we the civil society, demand the following:
1. Call on the Government of South Sudan, SPLM-IO, Former Detainees and the Political parties to immediately form the Transitional Government of National Unity.
2. Call on the main parties to resolve pending issues after the formation of the Transitional Government of National Unity.
3. Call on the Leader of SPLM-IO Riek Machar to quickly come to Juba to expedite the holistic process of the implementation of Peace Agreement.
