Ten more Darfur rebels killed in Libya
February 5, 2016 (KHARTOUM) – Ten Sudanese rebels from Darfur region were killed Friday in southern Libya following clashes with a local armed group.
On Thursday Sudanese army spokesperson Ahmed al-Shami said the Libyan Army killed over 20 SLA fighters outside al-Kufra near the Sudanese border. He added the rebels were forced to enter in the Libyan territory after their defeat by the Sudanese army.
But a Libyan source said the Darfurian rebels tried to recapture Bouzriq area in the southern part of Al-Kufra that they had controlled for three months before to be dislodged by the Libyan army.
The commander of the Libyan Subul Assalam faction, Abdel Rahman Hashim, according to Reuters said his group was retaliating for armed robberies and attempted attacks on Kufra.
Kufra Mayor Miftah Bou Khalil confirmed to Reuters that Subul Assalam fighters attacked an oasis 150 km north-west of Kufra on Friday, killing 10 Sudanese fighters and capturing four others.
Since several months Sudanese officials say Darfurian rebel factions are now based in the lawless neighbouring Libya where competing governments failed to form a national unity government despite the increasing presence of Jihadist fighters in the North African country.
