SRF-Agar calls for meeting of Sudan’s main opposition groups, seeks new impetus
February 6, 2016 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF) led by Malik Agar Saturday agreed on the need to re-energize activities of the Sudanese opposition forces inside the country and called to hold a meeting for the “Sudan Call” forces.
The SRF Agar held a meeting in Paris with the participation of the Sudan people’s Liberation Movement -North (SPLM-N) National Umma Party faction led by Naser al-Din al-Mahdi and the eastern Sudan opposition group, the United Popular Front for Liberation and Justice (UPFLJ) of Zainab Kabashi on Saturday 6 February .
According to a statement issued by Malik Agar SPLM-N leader and chairman of the opposition SRF Umbrella, the meeting appreciated the broad development of mass mobilization in all cities and rural areas of Sudan, with its various forms of demonstrations and protests, and the establishment of new opposition platforms.
After discussing the stagnation of the opposition action and the controversies taking place in various opposition forums, the meeting agreed on the need for a minimum programme to restructure the opposition activities, and openness to all the forces of change as a necessary condition to overthrow the ruling regime, said the statement.
“The meeting discussed new ideas about the Sudanese Revolutionary Front and Sudan Call umbrellas,” further stressed Agar .
The participants decided to address a written letter to the leader of the other SRF faction, Gibril Ibrahim, in order to hold an urgent meeting to discuss confidence building and ways to coordinate actions for the sake of a negotiated peace agreement and external action.
Also, it was agreed to task Malik Agar, Nasreldin al-Mahdi and Zeinab Kabashi with the contact of the Sudan Call Leadership Coordination Council in order to convene an urgent meeting to support popular mobilization, unity of the forces of change, and to address the challenges of popular uprising.
Since October 2015, the SRF split into two factions one headed by Malik Agar and the second by Gibril Ibrahim. However, the two factions have to work together and to coordinate their action when it comes to the African Union brokered peace process.
The two factions have to negotiate a comprehensive cessation of hostilities and humanitarian access to civilians in the war affected areas before to engage in an inclusive political and constitutional conference involving the opposition groups.
The meeting said that a comprehensive peace agreement cannot be achieved without stepping up the opposition action, consolidating the poplar mobilization and defeating the regime militarily to change the balance of power and “prevent the regime from buying time in a useless negotiating process”.
Recently the African mediation in vain organized informal talks between the warring parties in the Blue Nile and South Kordofan states in new approach aiming to bridge the gaps between the Sudanese government and the SPLM-N.
However the two sides remain at odd on several issues related to the humanitarian access and ways to end the four-year conflict.
