Abu Garda calls to vote in favour of Darfur’s five states

February 7, 2016 (KHARTOUM) – The Liberation and Justice Party (LJP) voiced Sunday its support for the maintain of five states in Darfur rejecting calls to for a single region in western Sudan.

Next April, the residents of Darfur region are called to determine the administrative status of the region as they have to vote the retention of the status quo of States system or the reestablishment of one region.

However, Darfurians are divided over those who are against the referendum or for the vote. While, the latter who are mainly composed of the signatories of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) include the supporters of five states, or those who are in favour of the region.

LJP chairman Bahr Idriss Abu Garda Sunday was the first Darfurian leader to announce his support for the maintain of five states stressing “it is best suited for the people of Darfur”.

Abu Garda who was speaking in a press conference held in Khartoum said he was supportive for the regional administrative system in the whole Sudan not only in Darfur.

He further called on the party members to register in the pooling centers, stressing that every Darfurian has the right to take part in the plebiscite including the displaced people and armed groups.

The Darfur referendum commission Sunday announced that the voter registration process will start on Monday 8 February and will continue to 28 February in the 1400 registration centers

Abu Garda said that calls by some rebel groups to boycott the referendum, will be ignored because the vote is stipulated in the DDPD.

Recently the national dialogue subcommittee for freedoms and rights called to postpone the administrative referendum.

Also several lawmakers had previously called to postpone the referendum saying the exercise will create a new turmoil in Darfur and also noted the huge financial cost of the referendum.
