Sudanese opposition forces call to boycott Darfur referendum
February 13 2016 (KHARTOUM) – The opposition “Sudan Call” alliance denounced the policies of the government of President Omer al-Bashir and called on the population of Darfur region to boycott an administrative referendum scheduled to be held next April.
“To bring the country out of crisis , for all of us in the Sudan Call we consider there is no solution other than overthrowing the regime through the experienced and innovated resistance,” said the statement.
“We call on our people in Darfur to boycott the alleged referendum and call on all our people, in every corner of the country, to step up the resistance” in order to end war and achieve changes, further said the opposition alliance.
The statement stressed that Darfur main groups were not part in the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) which provides the legal framework of the plebiscite, and described it as a “defective agreement”.
The Sudan Call forces accepted a roadmap for peace and democratic reforms prepared by the African Union Peace and Security council within the efforts of the African Union mediators to end war and bring stability in the east African country.
But the Sudanese government refused to hold a preparatory meeting for the national dialogue as it is provided in the African peace plan . Also peace talks with the rebel groups are stalled.
Since the opposition groups pledged to develop peaceful means to topple the regime and called to mobilize the Sudanese street.
Nonetheless, regional mediators and international facilitators continue their efforts to reach a compromise acceptable to all the parties to end the armed conflicts, open humanitarian access to the war affected areas and to hold an inclusive constitutional conference.
