SRF-Gibril prepare for peace talks, calls for meeting to reunite rebel umbrella
February 15, 2016 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF) led by Gibril Ibrahim in a meeting held last week discussed the ongoing regional and international efforts to end the armed conflicts in Sudan and ways to coordinate positions.
The meeting further called for an urgent summit meeting between the two factions of the SRF to overcome their organizational differences and reunite the rebel umbrella.
In a statement extended to Sudan Tribune Monday, Ibrahim said the SRF-Gibril held a meeting in the French capital Paris on 12 February to discuss political, military and humanitarian developments in the country and Darfur region particularly.
Ibrahim said he briefed the participants about the outcome of a meeting held by the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and Sudan Liberation Movement-Minni Minnawi (SLM-MM) with the Qatari deputy prime minister last January to discuss ways to end Darfur conflict.
He further said that JEM and SLM-MM are “in the process of providing the Qatari party with their vision for a comprehensive solution to the Sudanese issue in the near future”.
The two rebel groups demand to open the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur for discussions, saying some of the solutions adopted in the framework agreement need to be reviewed.
In their 11 January-meeting with the Qatari official they pledged to send him the points they want to discuss in a separate negotiations with the government before to join a national constitutional conference on the whole Sudan.
The two movements met with the Sudanese government delegation in Ethiopian town of Debre Zeit, on 24 January. The two parties described the meeting as positive.
The meeting further called for an urgent summit meeting with the SRF-Agar to overcome the organizational differences and reunite the SRF as a prelude to unify the Sudanese opposition.
The statement also stressed the need for a joint work among the political and armed opposition, calling for mobilizing the masses and activating means of the popular uprising.
It pointed to the formulation of a number of committees to develop the regulatory frameworks and review the structures of the SRF, saying that several proposals have been made to find and develop the financial sources of the rebel umbrella.
Divergences appeared within the SRF groups, last October when the three groups from Darfur region issued a statement announcing the appointment of the leader of Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) Gibril Ibrahim as chairman of the rebel umbrella.
Since then, the SRF has practically split into two factions, one headed by the leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation movement/North (SPLM-N) Malik Agar and the second by Gibril Ibrahim.
