Dozens of youth arrested in Wau state
February 24, 2016 (WAU) – Dozens of youth were on Tuesday detained by authorities in South Sudan’s Wau state over their alleged involvement in violent clashes, which occurred in the eastern bank of Jur River county.
It is unclear what caused skirmishes at the main cattle auction in Wau.
Eyewitnesses told Sudan Tribune that several youth obtained minor injuries during the incident, which the state governor, Elias Waya Nyipuoch also confirmed.
“Yes the state government has confirmed the incident and now we have intervened. Those who were involved were arrested,” explained Nyipuoch.
“On the state security circumstances, the situation is calm, our security apparatus had made all possible and now everything is back to normal in the state,” he added.
One of the country’s newly-created states, Wau has since last week been locked in a cycle of mass attacks mainly sparked off by youth groups.
Similar incident were also reported in neighbouring Tonj South county. On Tuesday, for instance, two people were killed and three others wounded in a surprise attack at Akuc-chieng village, located southwest of Tonj town.
