PCP says opposition parties plan to dismantle Sudanese army

February 26, 2016 (KHARTOUM) – A leading member of the Islamist Popular Congress Party (PCP) slammed the Sudanese opposition parties that refuse to participate in the national dialogue and accused it of planning to dismantle the national army.

The (opposition ) parties rejecting the dialogue have an agenda to dismantle the national army and the state institutions, and to separate religion from the state. These are the reasons for our withdrawal from the opposition (alliance),” Omer said.

“We will not allow the collapse of the country,” he further stressed in a speech he delivered at the military academy in Omurdman on Friday .

The PCP of Hassan al-Turabi was part of the National Consensus Forces (NCF) coalition which had being gathering the left parties and National Umma Party.

However, the Sudanese Islamist party, which split from the National Congress Party (NCP) in 1999, is now backing the regime, saying the defence of the Islamic state in Sudan should prevail over their political differences.

Turabi’s party is now the main opposition political pillar of the national dialogue process, after refusing to follow other opposition parties that had joint the political process but distanced themselves after the NCP refusal to create a conducive environment.

Omer said the armed forces gave their lives to preserve the country stressing that “any political settlement should include the armed forces because they bear the consequences of political decision”.

He further went to plead in favour of the national dialogue saying it is “the biggest political project in the history of Sudan” initiated by a national will. He added that they will not accept any inference from the United States or the international community in the internal political process.

The PCP official stressed that the approach of the internal political process and its transparency shut the door before any rebellion against the state, pointing that the national dialogue represents a chance to establish a political consensus on the issues and challenges the country is facing.
