South African diplomat appointed as UNAMID deputy chief
March 2, 2016 (KHARTOUM) – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and African Union Commission Chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma appointed a South African diplomat as Deputy Joint Special Representative for the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID).
Mamabolo has served since 2013 until his appointment as Permanent Representative of the Republic of South Africa to the UN.
In 2009, he was appointed South Africa’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Nigeria . Previously, Mamabolo facilitated peace processes in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi as the Special Envoy of the Republic of South Africa to the Great Lakes Region (2006-2009).
He also served as Deputy Director-General for African Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Africa (2002-2006).
From 1999-2002, he was South Africa’s Ambassador to the African Union and to Ethiopia, Sudan, and Djibouti.
He studied social science at Moscow School of Social Sciences in the former Soviet Union. Also, he is a holder of a Master’s degree in public administration from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, a diploma in journalism from Harare Polytechnic College, Zimbabwe.
Born in 1955, he is married and has four children.
