Wau state constitutional review committee end work
March 3, 2016 (WAU) – Members of the Transitional Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) in South Sudan’s Wau state have finished amending the state constitution.
The committee, formed on 28 January by the state governor Elias Waya Nyipuoch, was to review and make amendments on the state transitional constitution.
The chairperson for constitutional review committee, Agiu Athai said his team amended 20 articles, which were not merging with the new state.
“The committee was formed on 28 January and our timeline was one month, our mandate was to review and amend the state transitional constitution in our several meetings. We discovered almost 20 articles which still have relationship with the former state, so we went deep, targeted them and amended them to merge with the new state,” said Athai.
The team comprised of 12 members, divided into the legislature, administration and the judiciary represented by the legal advisor to the state legislative assembly.
He added, “So our amendment is divided into three parts, the first part were the final article, which we completed in total and the second part were the articles that have relationship with the national constitution that we reserved, until the final armament of the national constitution”.
Meanwhile, the state governor thanked the constitutional committee for the hard work.
He urged lawmakers to cooperate with the state government to achieve development, maintain security of the state citizens and fight corruption.
“We should not be discouraged about what is happening now. We have to work hard to overcome these challenges to regain peace,” said Nyipuoch.
