36 wounded Yemenis arrive in Sudan for treatment
March 22, 2016 (KHARTOUM) – A new batch of the wounded Yemenis Sunday night has arrived in Sudan via Saudi Arabia.
The latest batch, including 36 injured Yemenis has been immediately transferred to Merowe Medical City, 310 km. north of the Sudanese capital, Khartoum.
The wounded Yemenis, who arrived in Sudan as part of the agreement signed between the Sudanese Red Crescent (SRC) and King Salman Center for Humanitarian Aid (KSCHA), were received at Khartoum airport by Sudan’s state minister of health Sumaya Akad, SRC general secretary and the Yemeni Chargé d’affaires in Khartoum.
Last February, the KSCHA and the SRC signed three agreements pertaining to supporting the rare specialties, supporting medical cadres inside Yemen besides treatment of wounded Yemenis in Sudanese hospitals.
Also, the SRC has signed a contract with the Merowe Medical City to receive and treat the wounded Yemenis.
Last October, the director of the Immunization Department at Sudan’s Ministry of Health has resigned in protest against a request by Akad to withdraw money from his department to cover the cost of treatment of wounded Yemenis.
Also, last September, the director of Emergency Management & Humanitarian Work Ahmed Mohamed Zakaria tendered his resignation and withdrew from a committee tasked with receiving wounded Yemenis after verbal altercations between Akad and staff at southern Khartoum Hospital following the arrival of a second plane carrying Yemenis injured in the ongoing conflict.
Meanwhile, a surgical team from the SRC will travel to the southern part of Saudi Arabia to treat the injured Yemenis in the border area between Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
Sudan participates with over 850 troops in the Saudi-led “Decisive Storm” against the Iranian-allied Houthi rebels in Yemen.
The Sudanese military participation in the campaign reconciled President Omer al-Bashir’s regime with the Saudi government, and marked the divorce with Iran.
