Sudan releases man who organized escape of US diplomat killers

April 5, 2016 (KHARTOUM) – Prison authorities in Khartoum Tuesday released Qusai al-Jaili who organized the escape of U.S. diplomat killers in 2008 on a presidential pardon dropping six years of his prison term.

Al-Jaili, was serving twelve-year jail sentence for masterminding the escape of four Sudanese extremists who killed John Granville and his Sudanese driver Abdel Rahman Abbas on 2008 New Years Eve.

Sudan Tribune has learnt that the extremist who is in jail since six years has received a presidential pardon for good behaviour and memorizing the Quran, a matter that helped him take advantage of the prison regulations.

In September 2015, the Islamist militant had been transferred from Kober Prison to Alhuda Prison outside the capital after he had gone on a hunger strike for mistreatment to improve healthcare, and to remove his handcuffs.

The sources said that al-Jaili who was recently transferred again to Kober Prison after a suicide attempt is expected to be released on Wednesday.

Al-Jaili is the second inmate involved in the organization of the escape of Grandville killers to be released on a presidential pardon.

In February 2013, an accomplice in the escape operation Mubarak Mustafa was released after receiving a presidential pardon. At the time, his lawyer didn’t explain the reason of the amnesty.

Mustafa and al-Jaili are reportedly belong to the Islamic militant group Ansar al-Tawhid.

Grandville killers were sentenced to death by hanging in 2009 but they managed to escape with the support of the two men in 2010.

Three of the four fugitives managed to reach Somalia where two of them were killed in the Horn of Africa country. The fourth, Abdel-Ra’uf Abu-Zaid Mohamed Hamza, was re-arrested and still waiting his execution in Kober Prsion.

Hamza was recently on a 10-day hunger strike to protest against ill-treatment. Also his family says his health extremely deteriorated and suffers from high blood pressure.
