Clashes continue to take place in Darfur’s Jebel Marra : UN
April 6, 2016 (NEW YORK) – Clashes and bombing continue to take place in Darfur area of Jebel Marra between the government forces and the fighters of the rebel Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdel Wahdi al-Nur, a UN official said Wednesday.
In a briefing to the United Nations Security Council, U.N. Security Council, peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous said the hybrid mission deployed in the region cannot establish an objective assessment of the military situation in the area due to the restrictions imposed on its movement.
“However, we can address that at present, clashes and air strikes continue, many information received by UNAMID reports,” Ladsous said. He added that during the last month of March fighting reportedly occurred in north of South Darfur area of Kass, in Sorong, Kadingo and Kawila of central Darfur.
“UNAMID also continues to receive reports of government troops reinforcements to Golo and Guldo in central Darfur, the epicenter of the fighting,” he stressed.
Earlier last month, Sudanese military officials said the army is in control of all the areas located in the northern part of Jebel Marra.
During his tour in the region this week, President Omer al-Bashir said Darfur is free of rebels and vowed to “clean” Jebel Marra of rebels’ pockets.
Ladsous confirmed the recent reports about the humanitarian situation of the clashes saying the number of civilians who fled the fighting has reached 130,000 displaced.
He further called on the Sudanese government and the SLM-AW to stop the fighting and to join the negotiating table “without preconditions”.
INVESTIGATE UN REPORTS
Sudan’s Ambassador to the United Nations Omer Dahad Fadl who took part in the UN Security Council meeting severely criticized the trimesterial report about UNMAID activities and the security and humanitarian situation in Darfur.
He further called to investigate the contents of this report and called for more transparency in the editing process of UNAMID reports.
This does not only necessitate denunciation. Rather, it requires investigating the contents of the report. Out of our considerable faith in the Secretary General of the United . Nations, we call upon him to seriously look into this matter.
According to the Sudanese diplomat, the report which is not yet released says that all the opposition forces have boycotted the national dialogue process. he pointed that around 81 political parties are participating in the prcess
He further said that “most of the contents of this report clash with the conclusions of the two technical meetings” between the government of the Sudan and UNAMID in Khartoum on 13 January, and 23 February, 2016.
The Ambassador also mentioned that the reports refer several times to “racial dimension” of Darfur conflict adding the matter only in fact is about traditional dispute between farmers and pastoralists.
He however praised the report for pointing to the decline of tribal conflicts, the receding of criminal acts, increasing coordination between security argons and UNAMID to investigate attacks on the peacekeeping mission.
