Footballer shot dead in South Sudan town
April 10, 2016 (WAU) – Unknown gunmen on Saturday shot dead a footballer in South Sudan’s Western Bahr el Ghazal state.
The deceased, identified as Severino Zabun, used to play for Al-Etihad football club in Western Bar el Ghazal.
Zabun and his brother were allegedly shot by a soldier attached to the army’s 5th division headquarters in Wau.
“The player and his brother were shot by a soldier as they returned from a United Nations relief food distribution center,” a relative told Sudan Tribune Sunday.
“They found a soldier on their house removing iron sheets but when they asked him what he was doing in their house, the soldier responded by shooting,” he added.
Zabun died on spot while his brother is reportedly in a critical condition at Wau teaching hospital.
Eyewitnesses say the trigger-happy soldier was immediately killed by irate residents, an incident which Sudan Tribune could not independently verify.
