The state police commissioner, James Enoka confirmed the incident, saying it involved a land cruiser carrying six security personnel from the capital, Juba.

When they reached Bangasu payam at around 8 pm, unknown gunmen in the bush shot randomly at the car killing one security personnel, while one jumped out of the car and ran into the bush [but] later in the morning appeared to join his colleagues at Makpandu, he said.

Describing the incident as an isolated one, Enoka warned people against travelling in the night to various destinations.

Investigation, he said, has been launched although no one had so far been arrested in connection with the incident.

According to the commissioner, police still faces challenges, owing to the number of weapons in hand of the population.

Yambio county has, however, been relatively peaceful after government recently signed a peace deal with members of South Sudan National Liberation Movement (SSNLM).
