Opposition leader wants S. Sudan peace deal respected
April 20, 2016 (KAMPALA) – South Sudan’s Peoples Liberal Party leader, Peter Majondit has urged the country’s main rival factions to implement last year’s peace deal and expedite the formation of the Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU).
His remarks came after the armed opposition leader, Riek Machar failed to return to the national capital, Juba on Monday and Tuesday as scheduled.
“The leaders and parties to the agreement must understand that power comes from people and is expressed through people in democratic process of elections,” said Majongdit.
He added, “Power resulting from armed opposition or peace agreements can only serve a temporary purpose, but a democratic power comes from people of South Sudan that are now suffering due to reckless leadership”.
The opposition party leader wondered why too much attention was being given to armed groups at the expense of the millions of South Sudanese displaced by fighting.
“Unless we learn democracy instead of rebellion and dictatorship, South Sudan will be governed by agreements”.
An outspoken leader, Majongdit advised the South Sudanese population to rethink about the country’s future.
“Apparently the country is held hostage by leaders with arms and has indicated no willingness to reform and render even the basic services to their citizens and element that put democracy reforms on backdoors,” he explained.
The opposition leader, in a statement, advised the country’s warring faction leaders to expedite the formation of a unity government and ensure the nation embarks on recovery.
Over two years of conflict in the country has led to death of tens of thousands of people, with over two million displaced.
The United States government on Tuesday urged South Sudan government to ensure formation of a national unity government as stipulated in the August 2015 peace deal.
