S. Sudan student union probes ex-leader over corruption

April 25, 2016 (KAMPALA) – Members of South Sudanese students’ union said they have formed a committee to investigate corruption cases involving its former president who allegedly mismanaged unspecified sums of the association’s finances.

The union leader, Albino Akol said the committee, headed by Marial Makuong, would investigate the former union president accused of corruption.

Akol vowed he would work closely with all students to address challenges that may be an obstacle to their studies

“Despite inadequate funding, the union strived to graduate at least 95 students in 2016 keeping other factors like retakes constant,” Akol told Sudan Tribune Monday.

He added, “Owning to the facts that out of 143 students assisted, 95 were in their final semesters”.

The union’s information secretary, Koch Madut said the leadership was doing enough to combat corruption, describing it as the disease hampering the union’s progress.

“Despite all the mess and low reputation [resulting] mainly from previous leaders, we still appealed for President Salva Kiir’s directives and advices,” said Madut.

He said current union leadership would encourage accountability and transparency.

About 30,000 South Sudanese students study in Uganda due to its quality education system.
