Two women killed by rocket targeting East Darfur governor residence
April 26, 2016 (ED-DAEIN) – Two women were killed and several others severely injured when a shell fell near the house of East Darfur governor Anas Omer in the state’s capital, Ed-Daein in the early hours of Tuesday.
Reliable source told Sudan Tribune Wednesday that gunmen fired R.P.G. shells from Hai Al-Arab neighbourhood targeted at the governor’s house, saying however the shells fell on a nearby house killing two women and wounding a child as well as four students.
The same source pointed that the governor’s guards fired back heavily, prompting panic among the residents before the situation returns to normal later.
An official from the North Darfur Students Union told Sudan Tribune that a number of students from a band working on promoting creation who were visiting Ed-Daein have been wounded in the incident saying some of the injuries are serious.
He added the band went to Ed-Daein to participate in the students’ summer work program which would be inaugurated by the vice-president Hassabo Mohamed Abdel-Rahman.
The same official affirmed that two students were slightly injured while a third one has sustained serious wounds.
It is noteworthy that the vice president has arrived in Ed-Daein on Tuesday morning to inaugurate the summer work program and he immediately met with the security committee in East Darfur to discuss the security situation in the state.
On 18 April, suspected tribal gunmen killed three guards and burned down the house of East Darfur governor in Ed Daein to protest against the death of a leading member of a Rezeigat militia.
The attack of the governor house by the Rezeigat Savanna Militia members intervened 24 hours after clashes between them and gunmen belonging to their arch-rival Maalia tribe where 12 people were killed over stolen camels in Yassin county in East Darfur.
Following the incident, the state’s governor declared a curfew from 7pm to 7am in the capital Ed-Daien vowing to bring the perpetrators to justice.
