UNMISS condemns attack on its camp in Bentiu
April 28, 2016 (JUBA) – The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) on Thursday issued a statement condemning an attack, it said, was carried out on its camp in Bentiu, the administrative headquarters of the country’s oil producing Unity state.
The world body, in the statement, did not directly reveal identities of the perpetrators though it explained that initial investigations indicate that the projectile, along with earlier small arms fire, was directly targeted at the UN compound in Bentiu.
Where the UNMISS compound is located, it further stressed, is well known and there were no known armed forces in the vicinity of the base at the time of the attack.
“The United Nations takes this opportunity to remind all South Sudanese actors of the sanctity of UN staff, equipment and installations, including the Protection of Civilians sites and their residents”, adds the statement extended to Sudan Tribune Thursday.
There are about 200,000 civilians sheltering at six UNMISS camps across South Sudan, including in the capital Juba, Bor, Bentiu, Wau and Malakal, the world body said recently.
