Unity state authorities recover over 60 stolen cattle
May 16, 2016 (BENTIU) – Authorities in South Sudan’s Unity state said they recovered 64 herds of cattle looted from neighbouring Aweng county and have now returned them to their respective owners in neighbouring Warrap region.
The commissioner for Mayom county, John Bol Mayak said armed youth raided the animals last month.
Mayak thanked local chiefs and residents for cooperating with area authorities to identify where animals were hidden.
He urged South Sudanese to embrace peace, describing it as a pillar for achieving stability in the war torn country.
“We have to respect one another and this will happen when the local citizens refrain from attacking other communities. We need to live in peace for the prosperity of South Sudan,” stressed the commissioner.
Mayak said the government would try its best keep laws and order, citing its role in recovering the stolen animals.
“The recovery and return of dozen of cattle to owners mark truth and real commitment to the formation of joint court. I urged my colleagues in other side of the states to apply the laws and order,” he said.
A series of meetings were conducted by the commissioners of Ajakuach, Aweng, Mayom and Turalei counties, as part of efforts to end the rampant cattle thefts in the region.
The commissioner said he was mobilising his counterparts from other regions on holding series of border talks to ensure criminals who operate along their border are apprehended.
